I did the Spring Sprint Triathlon this morning. I haven't done this race in 10 years. I looked up my last race result and I finished in 57: 38. I'd be wishful thinking if I thought I would even come remotely close to that time today. I did finish it in 1:05:34. I have to confess that I did not get into the pool once to prepare for this event. I am an adequate swimmer, but I don't like to make myself suffer in the water as much as I do on the bike and the run. So, that pretty much describes my game.....catch up. Out of the water behind and play catch up from there on out. I really did enjoy participating in this race and that was what I was hoping to get out of doing it. I've already decided to do a few more races this year.
One thing I will say, is that all the CrossFit training I've done made this race easier to do. I know that I'm competing with a lot of specialists in this sport, but having a huge fitness base proved that there need not be a large time commitment to be competitive in triathlons. At least Olympic distance and shorter. There is no better evidence than my swim result. No swim training, not even a warm up before hand, and my breathing was not any more labored than during a CrossFit workout. So, I'll continue to do CrossFit workouts 3-4 times a week and get as many bike miles in as I can, while working in a run and swim workout here and there. This is going to be fun.
Way to go Paul! You're such an inspiration.
